Devon oak · milled on the edge of Exmoor

Slow-grown oak, milled to order in the Exe Valley.

Waney-edge boards, beams and rounds cut from Devon hardwood on our own ground. Air dried and milled to order, ready for oak-frame builds, joinery and one-off pieces that outlast the person who made them.

What comes off the mill

Hardwood cut from trees we know, tracked from the stump to the stack.

English oak

Quercus robur

The backbone of the yard. Dense, durable and full of figure, cut through-and-through so you can follow a whole boule board by board. For framing, flooring, worktops and mantels that only get better with age.

Wych elm

Ulmus glabra

Wild, interlocked grain that resists splitting, with a warmth oak doesn’t have. Prized for tabletops and seats where the figure is the whole point. Milled when we can get good logs.

Ash

Fraxinus excelsior

Pale, tough and springy, takes a finish beautifully. Ideal for furniture and turning. Comes and goes with what the season and the woodland bring in.

In the round

Oak rounds, cut to the diameter you need.

Cross-cut discs and log sections for traditional builds, staddle stones, steps and centrepieces. Green for carving, seasoned for stability, sawn to the size on your drawing. Tell us the diameter and thickness and we’ll cut from the right log.

The mill

“Ask me what a plank came from and I’ll tell you the tree it was cut from.”

Harvey is an experienced tree surgeon with a deep love of the woodland he grew up in. The timber is locally sourced and milled by him, most of it wind-blown or storm-damaged, or trees that had to come down for safety and would otherwise be chipped or burned. Nothing is taken needlessly, and what’s cleared gets replanted. Every board is tracked from the standing tree to the stack, so what you get is Devon hardwood with a known story, milled by the same person who recovered the tree.

Conservation & traditional methods

Timber got the right way, cut the old way.

Most of the oak comes from trees that were already coming down. We take only what we need, look after the woodland around it, and replant what we clear. It’s milled to order and air dried the old way, for work that’s built to last.

How buying works

Reserve the board, then we sort the rest.

01

Reserve it

See a board you want and reserve it. Each piece is unique, so once it’s yours it comes off the stack and no one else can buy it.

02

We quote

We confirm the drying, moisture content and exact dimensions, then quote collection or delivery to your postcode. Timber’s heavy, so it’s quoted per order rather than guessed at checkout.

03

Collect or delivered

Collect from the yard in the Exe Valley, or we band it to a pallet and send it out. Either way it leaves stacked and protected.

While the shop is being built
